This is just a short message to parents and staff concerning when we might possibly get back into school. I have driven many roads myself, and at this point, there is no way I can safely open schools back up. As all of you know, Macon County is full of areas that “don’t see the sun” in winter. For that reason, schools are closed on Tuesday. A decision will be made about Wednesday sometime tomorrow. Hopefully the temperatures will stay above freezing some today and most of the day tomorrow. This, along with some potential rain tomorrow, should improve road conditions countywide. With any luck, we can get back in session by the end of the week.
This has been a very trying week for everyone across the county. I, like everyone else, was without power for an extended period of time. I appreciate the hard work and extra effort that were shown by the utility companies in the county and all of the first responders who worked countless hours to assist in any way possible.
As many citizens were aware, an emergency warming shelter was open at Macon County Jr. High School for those citizens in need. It opened on Monday of last week, and the last citizen left the facility on Saturday around noon. The Red Cross came in on Tuesday to assist with the shelter, and we are very grateful for that, but it was local individuals who provided the majority of the effort and work. There were school system employees on site at all times, as well as citizens who volunteered their time, and we managed to keep Macon County citizens warm and fed for the duration of the storm. City and county leadership were also present to assist in any way they could.
I got to witness firsthand what makes Macon County special to me. In a time when people needed help, Macon County came together to take care of its own. I was at the shelter multiple times every day to help and was completely overwhelmed by the amount of support that was given. Individuals, as well as businesses, donated needed items such as clothing, food, and toiletries to those who needed them. It made me proud to be from this county. The Red Cross workers were very complimentary of what was undertaken before they arrived on site, and the outpouring from the community once they got here. If you gave your time and volunteered, THANK YOU. If you donated items to the shelter, THANK YOU. If you prayed for those working and staying at the shelter, THANK YOU. Anything anyone did made a difference, no matter how small or trivial you may have thought it was. And to our employees who gave time away from their homes to work at the shelter, you have my utmost respect and gratitude.
Together, Macon County will come out strong on the other side. As is true with any rural area, we may not always get along all the time, but we do come together and take care of our own when we need to. I hope that your family is and continues to do well as we begin to try and “be normal” again. God Bless you all.

Due to continued to icy conditions and power outages, we are going to have to cancel our mini cheer clinic. We were really looking forward to seeing the future tiger cheer cheerleaders this weekend, but our team’s and participant’s safety comes first. We hope that everyone can come to our regular cheer clinic in June.  Stay safe and warm and as always, go tigers! 📣

Macon County Schools Employees: Payroll checks will be available for pickup from the payroll office at the Board of Education between 7:00 and 12:00 tomorrow, Friday, January 30 for substitutes and support staff who get paid on the last day of the month.
Spring 2026 Lafayette Little League Baseball and Softball in-person sign ups for tonight 1/28 have been CANCELED due to weather! There will only be one in-person sign ups on Saturday 1/31. Location has changed and now will be at Macon Bank main office in Lafayette. Time is 8-12. You can still register online until the end of the day on 1/31.
