Lafayette Lions Club Drug Essay
This year’s topic is “Drugs and the School-Age Student.” Explain how drugs affect you, your friends, your school, and what you think are the best ways to solve the drug problem in our schools.
One winner will be chosen from the junior high level and one winner from the high school level. Both winners will receive $50.
Essay guidelines
1. Essays are grouped into two categories: students in 6th-8th, and 9th-12th grades.
2. Essays should be a minimum of 500 words. No maximum.
3. Essays must have a cover sheet stapled to the essay. On the cover sheet, include the student's name, school, grade, age, and sponsoring teacher.
4. Typed essays are preferred, but neatly written essays will be accepted.
5. Content is more important, but style, grammar, and clarity matter too.
6. Winners will be notified by their teacher or principal.
7. Submissions will not be returned.
8. Essays are due December 16 and will be picked up at the schools on that date.

Calvary Baptist Christmas backpack program
Calvary Baptist Church – located at 6851 Highway 52 East in Lafayette – will once again be participating in its Christmas backpack program. The church will be giving away backpacks for children ages 2-17 who are in need of one of the backpacks, which contain a variety of essential supplies. Those backpacks will be given away on the morning of Dec. 13, following a light breakfast that will be provided and a Christmas program held at the church. The children and their families are invited to the program, which typically lasts approximately an hour. Interested individuals must register by Dec. 6. For more information or to register, call Craig Harris at 615-633-8090.
