Macon County Schools Transportation Department Just a reminder as school is fixing to start. Stop For School Buses What Are the Laws • On a two-lane highway everyone stops. • On a four-lane highway with a center turn lane everyone stops. • If a four-lane highway has a divider, like a median or an unpaved area at least 5 feet wide, traffic in the opposite direction can proceed with caution. Only traffic behind the bus must stop • MEETING A SCHOOL BUS: Any driver meeting a school bus or church bus on which the red stop warning signal lights are flashing should reduce his speed and bring the vehicle to a complete stop while the bus stop signal arm is extended. The vehicle must remain stopped until the stop arm is pulled back and the bus resumes motion.

OVERTAKING A SCHOOL BUS: Any driver approaching a school bus or church bus from the rear shall not pass the bus when red stop warning signal lights are flashing. The vehicle must come to a complete stop when the bus is stopped. The vehicle must remain stopped until the stop arm is pulled back and the bus resumes motion. • School Bus Warning Lights: It is illegal to pass a school bus that has stopped to load or unload students. Never pass on the right side of the bus, as this is where the children enter or exit. This is illegal and can have tragic results. You must stop and remain stopped until: • The bus has started moving, OR • The driver motions for you to proceed, OR • The visual signals are no longer activated such as the red flashing lights go off and/or the stop arm is pulled back. o YELLOW FLASHING LIGHTS: When the yellow lights on the front and back of the bus are flashing the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles. o RED FLASHING LIGHTS: When the red lights are flashing, and the stop arm is extended this indicates that the bus HAS stopped and that children are now getting on or off the bus. Motorists must stop their cars and wait until the red flashing lights are turned off, the stop arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they start driving again. • When a school bus is stopped at an intersection to load and unload children, drivers from ALL directions are required to stop until the bus resumes motion (as shown by the red vehicles in the diagram at right). It is a Class A misdemeanor, and the driver can be fined between $250 and $1,000 for not stopping for a stopped school bus. When driving on a highway with separate roadways for traffic in opposite directions, divided by median space or a barrier not suitable for vehicular traffic, the driver need not stop, but should proceed with caution. A turn lane in the middle of a four-lane highway is NOT considered a barrier, but a fifth lane that is suitable for vehicular traffic. Drivers meeting a stopped school bus on this type of road would be required to stop in both directions.

PARENTS, PLEASE READ: We were just informed that our Skyward migration has been rescheduled due to other updates. Please know that we are giving information to you as we receive it here at the district. This migration date and times are not set by us. With that being said, Skyward is still accessible for parents to complete online registration. All students from the 2025-2026 school year that are returning MUST complete online registration. If you have not completed this, please do so immediately. Any New Student to Macon County Schools will need to attend registration day on July 30th at the school that your child will attend. If you need your login information, please email your name and your child(ren)'s name(s) to skywardhelpdesk@maconcountyschools.org. Please do not call the Board of Education for this information. Emailing will be the quickest way to receive a response. Also, Skyward has been slow the past few days, so please be patient during the registration process.

Mrs. McKinney shared the following introduction:

I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! My name is Katie McKinney, and I am thrilled to be joining the Red Boiling Springs family this year as your new Librarian.

I just completed my 14th year in education. I spent the last 12 years teaching in Smith County, where I taught 1st grade for 9 years and most recently served as the librarian at Smith County Middle School for the past three years. Prior to Smith County, I taught for two years in DeKalb County. I am so excited to bring my passion for literacy to the 6–12 library here at RBS.

My husband, Dustin, and I are celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary this July. We live right here in Red Boiling Springs, along with Dustin’s son, Neyland, who will be entering the 5th grade this year.

I am excited for this opportunity to serve as the Librarian. I can’t wait to meet everyone at RBSHS!

“My name is Larissa Shrum. I am excited and honored to be taking on the role of 6-12 Instructional Leader. I have spent the last 9 years teaching 7th and 8th grade ELA and SS at Defeated Elementary. Prior to that, I taught high school Spanish for 12 years.

Red Boiling Springs School is excited to welcome Coach Michael Tirjan back home! We are thrilled to have him join our Bulldog family as our Junior High and High School Head Football Coach and High School Computer Science Teacher for the upcoming school year.

Coach Tirjan is returning to the community that helped shape him, and we couldn't be more excited to have him invest in the next generation of Bulldog students and athletes. His passion for education, leadership, and football will be a tremendous asset to our school and community.

From Coach Tirjan:

"My name is Michael Tirjan, and I am absolutely honored and blessed to be back helping the youth that I was once a part of! I am officially joining Red Boiling Springs School as your new Junior High and High School Head Football Coach, and I will also teach Computer Science at the High School.

Red Boiling Springs is where I spent many years playing football and basketball. After earning my Associate's degree at Cumberland University on a Track and Field scholarship, my wife Chelsea and I started our family, and we now have two beautiful daughters, Kalani and Kimber. Driven to do better for them, I went back to school and recently graduated in 2026 with my Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Coaching.

Again, it is an honor to return to the school that first sparked my passion for education and football, and I feel incredibly blessed to bring my family back to the community that raised me. My mission is to build a program rooted in positivity, a relentless work ethic, and the love for the game!"

We are incredibly excited for the future of Bulldog Football and for the positive impact Coach Tirjan will have both in the classroom and on the field. His enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to developing student-athletes and leaders make him a wonderful addition to our faculty and coaching staff.
